The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) says more states in the country will witness severe flooding as a result of heavy rainfall.

Clement Nze, director-general of the agency, disclosed this to journalists in Abuja, on Wednesday.

He said the prediction was based on the alarming rate of rainfall the country is experiencing presently.

According to him, the river flooding will begin next month as a result of increase in water from River Niger and River Benue.

He called on state governments to prepare for more flooding by putting needed measures in place.

The DG also faulted the state governments for failing to comply with the agency’s previous warnings on floods released earlier this year.

Cases of flooding have been reported in several states across the country, including the federal capital territory.

On Monday, a heavy downpour led to the collapse of a pedestrian bridge at the Gubi campus of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi state. Four students were reported dead.

In May, Adewura Lateefat Bello, a 26-year-old chartered accountant, was found dead in a canal as a result of flood in the Alimosho local government area of Lagos.

In Abuja, residents experienced a number of flood cases, which took over some major roads.
