Nine herders were reportedly killed on Monday after unknown gunmen attacked Ukpomachi community in Oyi LGA of Anambra state.

The attackers who were also armed with machetes were said to have invaded a building housing the herdsmen in the early hours of Sunday.

The state police command confirmed the incident, in which it said some persons were also injured.

In a statement on Monday, Tochukwu Ikenga, the command spokesperson, said the attack is being investigated.

Ikenga added that Monday Kuryas, the state commissioner of police, has deployed an intelligence team to apprehend the attackers.

“The assailants invaded the village in their numbers and attacked the residents, resulting in the death of nine persons whose identities are unknown,” he said.

“A crack team of operatives of the command led by an assistant commissioner of police has visited the scene and conducted on-the-spot assessment of the incidence.

“Normalcy has been restored to the area and adequate security put in place to forestall a similar occurrence.”

Anambra has witnessed a series of violent attacks in recent times.

Last Monday, some gunmen razed the zone 13 police headquarters in Ukpo area of the state, during a violent attack.

Earlier, on March 31, three police officers were killed when gunmen attacked Chukwuma Soludo, former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) at an event in Aguata LGA.
