Wuraola Adepoju, acting comptroller-general of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), on Wednesday visited officers of the agency who were injured during an attack by gunmen in Sokoto.
On July 28, gunmen attacked and killed two immigration officers, while four others were injured at a checkpoint in Mamman Suka village in Gwadabawa LGA of Sokoto state.
The injured officers were admitted at the Usman Danfodiyo Teaching Hospital.
The acting comptroller-general promised to support the families of the affected officers, adding that the NIS is working to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
Adepoju also carried out an assessment visit to the Illela border control post, to ensure implementation of the federal government’s directive on closure of land borders with Niger Republic.
Earlier, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) directed that all land and air borders between member countries and Niger be temporarily closed, following the coup that deposed the democratic administration of President Mohamed Bazoum.
Adepoju expressed satisfaction with the level of adherence to the border closure by personnel at the Illela control post.
She said personnel stationed at borders are faced with challenges while executing their duties, adding that the NIS will take advantage of the budgetary allocation to improve the welfare of officers.
“Having witnessed the working conditions firsthand, including the Mamman Suka checkpoint, I recognise the challenges faced by my personnel,” she said.
“I am committed to leveraging our budgetary allocation to enhance the overall welfare and working environment of our personnel nationwide.”
Adepoju was accompanied to Sokoto by Tony Akuneme, NIS FCT commandant.
