The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has urged citizens to stick to the terms of their visa when travelling to the United States to avoid expanded blanket restrictions on Nigeria.
The NIS issued an advisory to this effect on Thursday over concerns raised by the US regarding the misuse of its visas by Nigerians.
The statement signed by AS Akinlabi, NIS spokesperson, said violations of immigration or other laws may result in visa revocation or deportation from the US.
“Applicants are reminded that security screening by U.S. authorities continues beyond initial entry,” the statement said.

“Breach of visa conditions, including overstaying, may attract severe penalties, including removal from the U.S. and permanent ineligibility for future travel.”
The NIS also extended the advisory to students and tourists—two frequent categories of travellers.
“Nigerian students in the U.S. must remain in active study. Withdrawal, absenteeism, or change of academic programme without notification may lead to visa cancellation and loss of future eligibility,” the statement said.

“U.S. consular officers will deny tourist visa applications if they believe the primary purpose of travel is to give birth in the United States to obtain U.S. citizenship for the child.”
The NIS said it would continue to collaborate with the US mission in Abuja to ensure Nigerians’ compliance with visa regulations.
