The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited says it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Golar Liquefied Natural Gas Energy (GLNG), a Norwegian company, to build a floating LNG plant in Nigeria.

The national oil company made this known in a tweet on Wednesday night.

NNPC said Mele Kyari, its group chief executive officer (GCEO) and Karl Fredrik, chief executive officer (CEO) of Golar LNG, signed the agreement in Abuja.

“In furtherance of its efforts to deepen Nigeria’s domestic gas utilisation and enhance gas export, NNPC limited has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a Norwegian company, Golar LNG (GLNG), to build a floating liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Nigeria,” the national oil company tweeted.

“Group CEO of NNPC Limited, mallam Mele Kyari and CEO of Golar LNG, Mr. Karl Fredrik Staubo, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective companies during a brief ceremony held at the NNPC Towers in Abuja.”

According to NNPC, Golar LNG is one of the world’s largest independent owners and operators of marine-based LNG midstream infrastructure that is “active in the liquefaction, transportation, and regasification of natural gas”.

On Tuesday, NNPC said the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline project will become functional in the third quarter of 2023.

“By the third quarter of this year, we’ll complete the entire welding of these works and what it means is that we can actually energise these lines.”

The AKK pipeline — Nigeria’s  biggest gas projects — is expected to transport two billion standard cubic feet of natural gas per day to three proposed independent power plants in Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, and other gas-based industries.

Kyari had noted that the AKK gas pipeline and stations project is a flagship project aimed at deepening the integration of the northern region of the country with the Niger Delta and other parts of the country.
