The 34 artillery brigade of the Nigerian Army in Obinze, near Owerri, Imo state, says it has begun the demolition of unserviceable ammunition and explosives.

In a statement on Friday, Babatunde Zubairu, acting assistant director of army public relations, said the exercise is being conducted by the 82 base ammunition depot, Enugu from May 14 to 21.

The acting director said the exercise would take place between 7am and 5pm daily throughout the period.

“The people of Obinze and surrounding communities are advised to keep away from the range area during the period of the exercise,” he said.

“This is not a cause for alarm as the Nigerian Army remains committed to the safety of Nigerians.”

The development comes after cartons of live ammunition were discovered on Sunday in Anambra state after a truck conveying them fell into a drainage and spilled its content.

“At about 4:00p.m. on May 9, 2021, there was an accident involving a truck along Awka expressway, Onitsha, and on receipt of this information, police operatives, military and other security agencies rushed to the scene and quickly cordoned off the area and recovered the truck with its contents,” spokesman of the Anambra state command had said.
