Life is not a bed of roses. Even as beautiful as roses are, they still need support to grow and maintain their beauty from many things; the sun, water, even the earth.

In order to live a life of influence and impact, it is necessary to understand the need for cultivating, and sustaining relationships as they do not only give us a sense of belonging, they also help us grow. Relating with a diverse set of people gives us the opportunity to expand our knowledge and interaction with the world as we would be able to draw from different experiences and influences. It is why we tend to gravitate towards those we can gain from.

Interdependence is why we are set up the way we are because of the need to leverage on strengths and downplay weaknesses, which is why in the game of football, there is the goalkeeper, the defense, the midfield and the attack; all expected to perform different duties but with the same goal in mind.

During a project meeting with a business partner, he related how he was able to execute some projects as a result of the relationships he had cultivated in the past;from being able to get things which he would otherwise have spent a lot of money on for free, to engaging certain people who helped crystallize his thoughts to provide for more immersive experiences, he stressed the need for relationships by espousing one irrefutable truth; it all begins with you.

It is important to note that to live a life of impact; one must be a person of value. What are the strengths you’ve identified? What are those things you can do better than the next person? What value can you add? When those questions are answered, you will find that you begin to attract other people who can aid your cause, and whose cause you can aid in return.

When you meet people, try to keep in touch. After a business meeting, send a thank you message. You never know who might be of assistance to you in the foreseeable future.

After all, no man is an island.
