The Chinese government says no Nigerian is among the 29 foreign citizens in China infected with coronavirus.

It said this in a statement issued through its embassy in Abuja, on Thursday.

The Chinese government said 74,576 confirmed cases have been reported in mainland China with 2,118 deaths, and 16,155 recovered victims.

It said of the 29 foreign citizens infected with the disease, 18 have recovered, nine are undergoing treatment, while two are dead.

“As of February 19, the National Health Commission had received 74,576 reports of confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland, including 2,118 deaths and 16,155 patients cured and discharged from hospital. There still remained 4,922 suspected cases,” the statement read.

“So far, 126,363 are now under medical observation, who have been identified as having had close contacts with infected patients. Also, 29 foreign citizens in China have been infected.

“Among them, 18 had recovered and were discharged from hospital, two were dead and nine are still under quarantine and treatment. No Nigerians are infected.”

Some Nigerians in Wuhan, the Chinese city hit by the disease, had appealed to the federal government to evacuate them.

But Olorunibe Mamora, minister of state for health, said the government would evacuate Nigerians living in China if the need arose.

Coronavirus has been confirmed in Singapore, UK, Spain, Vietnam, Germany, UAE, France, Japan, Thailand, Canada, Australia, Italy, Russia, the United States, among other countries.

Africa is free of the virus though a patient was placed under surveillance at a hospital in Egypt over the disease, the test came out negative.
