The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has condemned the assault of a female corps member by vigilantes in Anambra state.

On August 19, a video of security operatives invading a corps members’ lodge and accusing them of being internet fraudsters surfaced on social media.

One of the operatives was seen hitting a corps member, identified as Jennifer Elobor, while others stood by. Her clothes were torn in the process, revealing her body as she cried out for help.

The incident has drawn outrage on social media, with many Nigerians demanding justice for the victim.

In response, Ken Emeakayi, special adviser on community security to Chukwuma Soludo, governor of Anambra, described the incident as “unfortunate and unacceptable”, while the state police command confirmed the arrest of the suspects.

In a statement on Wednesday, Lanre Issa-Onilu, director-general (DG) of NOA, described the assault as “regrettable and unacceptable”, saying it undermines Nigeria’s collective values.

Issa-Onilu said the act was a violation of the dignity and rights of citizens and a betrayal of public trust.

“As clearly enshrined in the National Values Charter, both leaders and citizens have reciprocal responsibilities: leaders must guarantee accountability and uphold the public trust, while citizens must demonstrate a duty of care and mutual respect in their conduct toward one another,” the statement reads.

He commended the Anambra government for intervening and called for the prosecution of those involved in the assault.

“This is the least measure of justice due to the corps member whose rights and dignity were so brazenly violated,” he added.

The NOA DG further warned that incidents of abuse by those in authority tarnish Nigeria’s image and must not be repeated.
