The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) says it will reposition the agency to preserve the environment and restore public confidence and the damaged ecosystems.
Edward Omo-Erewa, the chairman of the NOSDRA board, spoke during the inaugural meeting of the agency’s reconstituted board in Abuja on Thursday.
Omo-Erewa, who presided over the meeting, said the organisation also plans to improve internal collaboration with key stakeholders.
“We recognize the critical role NOSDRA plays in safeguarding Nigeria’s environment and the health of its people. This board will work to restore public confidence, rebuild damaged ecosystems, and ensure a culture of compliance and transparency,” Omo-Erewa said in a statement.

The chairman said the board’s strategic priorities include strengthening communication and governance within the agency, implementing the national oil spill contingency plan, and rebuilding public trust through stakeholder engagement.
Omo-Erewa also urged board members to uphold professionalism and integrity, stressing their commitment to repositioning the NOSDRA in line with the Establishment Act of 2006.
In his remarks, Chukwuemeka Woke, the Director-General of the NOSDRA, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to working closely with the newly appointed board members.

He said collaboration is crucial in enhancing efficiency, strengthening regulatory enforcement, and building on past achievements.
“We are prepared to engage with the board in a robust and transparent manner to ensure the agency delivers on its mandate,” Woke said.
The director-general also urged all staff members to remain diligent and focused in carrying out their responsibilities, noting that their collective effort is essential to creating a stronger agency.
Woke also thanked President Bola Tinubu for reconstituting the board, stating that the agency is eager to work with the new board to achieve greater results.

According to the statement, the board is expected to provide oversight and leadership as NOSDRA enhances its capacity to manage oil spills and enforce environmental regulations nationwide.
