The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has announced the successful deployment of electronic barrier systems (EBS) at terminals in Lagos port to enhance operational efficiency and improve traffic management.
Electronic barrier systems (EBS) are automated security and access control setups that use electronic technology to regulate the entry and exit of vehicles—like trucks—at controlled points such as port terminals.
According to a statement on Thursday by Okechukwu Onyemekara, NPA’s general manager, corporate communication and strategy, Abubakar Dantsoho, managing director (MD) of the authority, said the initiative was the outcome of extensive consultations with key stakeholders, aimed at addressing the recurring problem of unauthorised truck diversions.
Dantsoho noted that unauthorised truck diversions had negatively affected terminal operations, disrupted traffic flow, and reduced overall port productivity.

According to the managing director, the EBS is fully integrated with the Eto electronic call-up system managed by Trucks Transit Parks Ltd (TTP).
He said the integration ensures that only trucks with valid call-up tickets issued through the Eto system can access terminal facilities, effectively eliminating unauthorised entries and enhancing gate control measures.
“We are pleased to announce that as of Sept, 1, all Terminals within the Lagos Port Complex will commence full live operations using the Integrated Electronic Barrier System,” Dantsoho said.

“This milestone represents a significant advancement in the authority’s drive for enhanced automation and modernisation of port infrastructure in Nigeria, and reflects the authority’s commitment.
“The authority is committed to supporting the federal government’s ease of doing business agenda, promoting transparency and accountability, enhancing port operational efficiency and strengthening truck traffic management.
“The NPA appreciates the cooperation of all stakeholders throughout the processes preceding this development.”
Dantsoho reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to implementing innovative solutions to improve service delivery and create a more efficient, secure, and business-friendly port environment.

The MD said the NPA would continue to strengthen its vision of becoming the hub for maritime logistics and sustainable port services in Africa.
