NPFL wrap-up: Akwa United upset Tornadoes as Plateau thump El-Kanemi

Akwa United silenced the city of Lokoja after a nailbiting 2-1 victory over Niger Tornadoes on Wednesday.

Akwa United head coach Abdu Maikaba had promised to lead his team to victory and he made sure the goods were delivered in a thrilling contest at the Confluence Stadium.

Denis Nya put the Promise Keepers in front with a well delivered spot kick in the 23rd minute before Nosiru Afees levelled for Tornadoes.

Former Remo Stars goal machine Victor Mbaoma broke the spine of the Ikon Allah Boys with the match winner.

Defending champions, Plateau United, defeated El-Kanemi Warriors 3-0, with the goals coming from Jimmy Ambrose, Joshua Obaje and Raphael Ayagwa.

A solitary strike from Stephen Alfred made the difference between Kwara United and Wikki Tourists in Ilorin. It was the first win of the season for the Harmony Boys.

Sunshine Stars increased their points tally to seven courtesy of goals from Bala Yahuza and Franklin Sasere against Rivers United at the Ondo Sports Complex.

Ex-Enyimba striker, Chinedu Ohanachom, popped up with the all-important goal as Yobe Desert Stars beat Lobi Stars 1-0 in Damaturu.

Enugu Rangers secured a narrow victory over hard fighting Katsina United with Godwin Aguda netting the only goal.

Julius Ubido cancelled out Adeseun Adelani’s strike as Heartland shared the spoils with Go Round FC in Omoku.

Abia Warriors’ poor away form continued at the Sani Abacha Stadium. The Umuahia Warriors lost 2-1 to Kano Pillars.

Meanwhile, MFM FC defeated FC Ifeanyi Ubah 2-1 courtesy of goals from Sikiru Olatunbosun and Jesse Akila. Seka Pascal’s equaliser turned out to be a mere consolation for the Anambra Warriors.
