The Ondo command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) says it has arrested one Babatunde Oluwasola for “trafficking three girls to Libya”.

In a statement on Wednesday, Aidamenbor Daniel, spokesperson of the command, said 56-year-old Oluwasola sent the girls to Libya through the desert — a two-week journey.

“Mr Babatunde Oluwasola a.k.a ‘Osanle’, 56 years, carpenter from Osun state but resides in Akure recruited 3 girls from Akure to Lybia sometime around April 2023,” the statement reads.

“He got one of them with the help of Mrs Dada Fowowe a.k.a Iya Alaso, 47 years, trader from Ondo state.

“The victims who travelled through the desert to Libya called Mr Babatunde through the agent that received them two weeks after their departure from Akure, Ondo state to intimate him of their arrival at Libya.”

Daniel said one of the victims, a 15-year-old girl, who was living with her parents up until her journey, failed to inform anyone about the trip.

“It is upon her arrival in Libya that she discovered that the situation she got wasn’t what she bargained for, hence she had to reach out to her father who had been looking for her, for help and the father in return reported the case to NSCDC Ondo state Command,” he added.

The NSCDC spokesperson said the suspect would be transferred to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) after the conclusion of investigations on the matter.
