NSCDC ‘foils kidnap attempt’ on customs officer’s family in Nasarawa, arrests two

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) says its operatives averted the kidnap of the family of an officer of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Nasarawa state.

Babawale Afolabi, NSCDC spokesperson, said on Thursday that the kidnap attempt was thwarted by the commandant-general’s special intelligence squad (CGsSIS) at the Bukan-Ari area, on the Kurikyo road in Lafia.

Afolabi said two of the suspected kidnappers were killed during the rescue operation, while two others were apprehended.

“The CGsSIS engaged the kidnappers and subdued them due to superior and intense firing power, which resulted in the arrest of two kidnappers,” he said.

“Two others were neutralised, while one escaped with severe injuries from gunshots but made away with an AK-47 rifle.”

According to the NSCDC spokesperson, the items recovered from the suspected kidnappers include one AK-47 assault rifle, one magazine, and 40 rounds of 7.62 mm special ammunition.

“Five different types of mobile phones, two knives, a cash of N7,500 and some substances suspected to be charms were also recovered,” he added.

Afolabi said those arrested are currently cooperating in the ongoing investigation and have confessed to their different levels of involvement in the series of kidnappings in Nasarawa.

He assured that efforts are ongoing to ensure the fleeing suspect and other syndicate members are arrested and brought to justice.
