NSIB: No fatality, six injured from Abuja-Kaduna train derailment

Abuja-Kaduna train derailment

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) says six persons sustained injuries after the Abuja-Kaduna train derailed on Tuesday. 

The train, which was travelling from Abuja to Kaduna, veered off the track as several coaches tumbled. The accident occurred between Kubwa and Asham stations.

Afterwards, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) had relayed that the train was conveying 618 persons, including 583 passengers and 15 NRC crew members.

In a statement, Bimbo Oladeji, the NSIB director of public affairs and family assistance, said no fatality was recorded during the incident.

Oladeji said the NSIB will investigate the mishap to prevent a recurrence.

“NSIB is aware of the derailment involving a Kaduna-bound train service which occurred at approximately 11:09 a.m. today, Aug. 26, 2025, at KM 49 between Kubwa Station and Asham Station,” the statement reads.

“Current information available indicates that six persons sustained injuries, and no recorded fatalities.

“A go-team has been deployed to the site to gather evidence, engage relevant stakeholders, and commence investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

“The bureau investigation into the incident will focus on identifying the direct and underlying factors that led to the derailment, with the aim of issuing safety recommendations to prevent a recurrence.”

On his part, Alex Badeh, the director-general of NSIB, sympathised with those who sustained injuries from the incident.
