The Anambra secretariat of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has begun planting trees at the permanent orientation camp in Umuawulu/Mbaukwu area to prevent soil erosion.

Kehinde Aremu, the state coordinator, said erosion was beginning to threaten major structures within the campground.

Speaking on Monday, he said about 100 trees, including palm, teak, gmelina, almond, sweet orange will be planted in the first phase of the exercise.

Aremu said Shuaibu Ibrahim, director-general of NYSC, had directed that the trees should be promptly planted to save the environment.

“We have embarked on a tree-planting campaign within the camp environment, this is against the backdrop of environmental degradation occasioned by uncompleted landscaping of the camp,” he said.

“Presently, the orientation camp, which has been commissioned by his excellency, Dr. Willie Obiano, is being ravaged by erosion with major structures in danger of collapsing.”

He also appealed to the governor to complete the landscaping aspect of the project on the camp.
