Olakunle Nafiu, DG of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has sought the Rivers government’s support, citing a significant rise in the number of corps members deployed to the state.
Nafiu spoke during an advocacy visit to Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, the state’s sole administrator, at the government house in Port Harcourt.
While commending the state government for its existing assistance to the NYSC Rivers State Secretariat, Nafiu highlighted the urgent need for additional hostel accommodation at the state’s orientation camp.
He explained that the NYSC now mobilises an average of 400,000 corps members annually nationwide, leading to a natural increase in allocations per state and necessitating an upgrade of camp facilities.

“The Orientation Camp is the Corps Members’ first point of contact with the NYSC and the domain of the three-week long Orientation Exercise that prepares them for the task of National Service and nation building,” Nafiu stated.
The DG emphasised the importance of a safe and conducive environment for effective induction.
He said the Rivers state orientation camp auditorium remains the most sizeable and modern among all the camps he had visited.

Ibas promised to look into the request for upgrading camp facilities, particularly the hostel accommodation.
