President Barrack Obama has promised to support the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to defeat the Boko Haram insurgents, saying his counterpart has come to office with “a reputation of integrity”.

Speaking at the Oval office in the White House during a meeting with the Nigerian leader on Monday, Obama described Buhari as a man who has a “clear agenda” for Nigeria.

“President Buhari comes into office with a reputation of integrity and a very clear agenda and that is to make sure that he is bringing safety and security and peace to his country,” he said.

“He is very concerned about the spread of Boko Haram and the violence that has taken place there and the atrocities that have taken place there and he has a very clear agenda of defeating Boko Haram and extremists of all sorts inside his country.

“And he has a very clear agenda with respect to rooting out the corruption that has too often held back the economic growth and prosperity of his country. On both these issues, we’re looking forward to hearing more about his plans and how the United States can partner with Nigeria.”

Describing Nigeria as one of the most important countries in the world, Obama said the 2015 general election and peaceful transition were affirmations of Nigeria’s comment to democracy.

Buhari thanked Obama, saying the US contributed to the success of the election.

“Nigeria would be ever grateful to the US for its support of free elections in our country,” he said.

“The US and European pressures to ensure the election was fair and credible led us to where we are now.”
