Obasanjo: Nigerians hardly see the good in themselves

Obasanjo: Nigerians hardly see the good in themselves

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo has urged Nigerians to identify and celebrate their “treasures”.

He said this in Abeokuta, capital of Ogun state, on Thursday, during a send-off ceremony in honour of Josiah Idowu-Fearon, a Nigerian bishop who was recently appointed secretary-general of the World Anglican Communion.

The programme, which held at the Green Legacy Resort inside Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, was organised by the family of the notable Nigerian leader.

Obasanjo observed that God endowed Nigeria with a lot of human treasures but Nigerians often fail to identify and appreciate the endowments.

“One thing we do not often do in Nigeria is identifying the good in ourselves,” he said. “But one of the things that God does fairly well for us is that he makes others to see the good in us.”

He described Idowu-Fearon as a Nigerian who should be honoured and celebrated.

In his response, the clergyman described his new appointment as “a feat and a tough assignment”, expressing optimism that he would succeed and make Nigeria and Africa proud.

Idowu-Fearon, whose appointment takes effect from July 1, is the first African to occupy that office.

He was the bishop of the Kaduna Anglican Communion.
