Officer killed as gunmen attack police checkpoint in Ebonyi

Gunmen have killed a police officer during an attack on a checkpoint in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi state.

Joshua Ukandu, spokesperson of the Ebonyi police command, said the incident happened on Thursday morning.

He said the gunmen also burnt a police patrol vehicle.

“It happened early on Thursday morning. I have been trying to get the details of what happened, but one police officer was killed and a vehicle was burnt,” NAN quoted Ukandu as saying.

“More details will be made available soon.”

The development comes weeks after gunmen attacked a police patrol team in the state.

Four police officers and two civilians were killed in the incident.

On February 2, gunmen also attacked a police patrol team along Ngbo-Effium road in Ohaukwu LGA of the state and engaged members of the patrol team in a gun duel.

One officer died during the shootout while another one was wounded.
