The Ogun state government says it has installed advanced aerodrome lighting systems at the Gateway International Airport to aid aircraft operations in all weather conditions.
A statement on Tuesday by Kayode Akinmade, special adviser to Dapo Abiodun, governor of the state, on media and strategy, said the installation has positioned the airport among the best in Nigeria.
Akinmade said the newly installed systems include a category I (CAT I) approach lighting system, which guides pilots during poor weather, as well as runway end lights, displaced threshold lights, and runway edge lights to improve visibility and aircraft alignment during landing and takeoff.
He noted that the airport also has precision approach path indicators (PAPI) — rows of coloured lights that help pilots maintain the correct descent angle during approach — further enhancing operational safety.

Akinmade said the airport, classified as a category 9 fire cover facility, is equipped to handle aircraft of all sizes at any time of day or night.
He added that the government has also developed VIP lounges and other modern facilities designed to provide comfort and business continuity for travellers.
The state government said the airport features a 3.4-kilometre runway capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 747, 777, and Airbus A380 and an 82,000-square-metre apron built to host large cargo aircraft.
