Wale Adedayo, the suspended chairman of Ijebu east LGA of Ogun state, has been impeached.

Adedayo was impeached on Thursday over allegations of financial misappropriation and diversion of funds.

Five out of the 11 councillors in the LGA assembly voted in support of his impeachment while four lawmakers voted against the impeachment and one was absent.

Fasheyi Akindele, the leader of the legislative assembly, announced the impeachment of the embattled erstwhile chairman in a letter.

The former chairman was reported to have appeared before the LGA legislative assembly on Thursday after he had ignored a series of invitations by the house.

Adedayo was reported to have admitted that he spent the council funds up to August whereas the laws only allow him to spend till March 2023.

He was said to have also owned up to spending N5.2 million to produce 20 chairs and tables instead of the 290 pieces approved by the state government.

Speaking after the council session, Adedayo said the “councillors were acting a script written from Abeokuta”, the state capital, adding that he knows the governor is offended by his stance.

“I told them this morning they were acting a script written by those in Abeokuta,” he was quoted as saying.

“All the documents about the allegations against me are in the office. But I know Mr. Governor is offended that we opened up to the public about how the federal allocation belonging to Ijebu East Local Government was being spent.

“I have done my duty as an Afenifere by letting our leader know why we have not been able to do much since we got into office. The rest is for the court to decide.”

Prior to his impeachment, Adedayo was suspended by the council after he accused Dapo Abiodun, the governor of Ogun, of hijacking funds meant for the LGAs in the state.

He had accused the governor of withholding the statutory federal allocation due to the LGAs for the last two years.

Shortly after the letter in which Adedayo accused the governor went viral, he was invited by the Department of State Services (DSS) for clarifications on the allegations.

On honouring the invitation, Adedayo was detained by the security service for three days. He was released on September 4.
