The Ogun government says it will begin enforcing a three-month jail term or a N2 million fine for indiscriminate waste disposal across the state.
Abayomi Hunye, special adviser to the governor on waste management, said residents have continued to dump refuse in unapproved spots despite repeated warnings and the availability of designated disposal points.
Hunye said the state has recorded a spike in indiscriminate dumping in markets in recent weeks, resulting in blocked drains, pollution and heightened health risks.
“Many people habitually dump refuse anywhere they choose, putting public health in jeopardy. The Ogun state government can no longer tolerate this pernicious practice,” he said.

“Under the 2020 law establishing the Ogun State Waste Management Authority, offenders are liable to an initial penalty of N25,000. Upon conviction, they face a maximum fine of N2 million, a three-month jail term, or both.
“There’s a law against this and henceforth, the state government will not hesitate to implement the provisions and bring sanity to the state.”
He added that waste containers have been provided in all approved markets, but enforcement will now be intensified to ensure compliance.
