Okocha drums support for coach Sunday Oliseh

Former Super Eagles captain, Austin Okocha has asked Nigerians to support his “friend and colleague,” Sunday Oliseh in his attempt to take the country back to the top.

Nigeria is currently ranked 66th in the world and 14th in Africa, a far cry from what it was when the then players won the Nations Cup for the country in 1994.

Oliseh stands a big opportunity improving Nigeria’s World and continental ranking if the nation does well at CHAN 2016 which is a FIFA ranking event – but it could plunge down the ranks if it fails to impress in Rwanda.

Okocha cautions that Oliseh should not be judged by the results at the African Nations Championship – should the team do badly, the former skipper thinks that it should not be a yardstick to measure an Oliseh who is also doubtful of success at the tournament.

“Well, I can’t set any target for the Super Eagles and coach Sunday Oliseh as far as the African Nations Championship is concerned,” Okocha, the Delta FA chairman said in a chat with Goal.

“Oliseh is my friend and he is my colleague. I think he’s got all it takes to get us back on track. We don’t have to use the CHAN to judge him. We just need to encourage and support him and let him do his thing.

“Hopefully, he is the right person to take us to where we want.”

The five-time AFCON player expressed the belief that Nigeria would surmount challenges from their Group G opponents in their qualification for the 2017 African Cup of Nations slated for Gabon.

“As regards the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, I believe that the Super Eagles can qualify but we have to do our homework well to achieve this.

“We have to accept first of all that we are no longer who we used to be. We have to humble ourselves and realize that we are starting afresh.

“Once we accept our fate at the moment I think we will qualify,” Okocha said.
