Olufemi Abegunde, Deloitte West Africa deputy chairman, is dead. 

Abegunde died in the early hours of Monday, August 30, 2021, in the United Kingdom after battling a COVID-19 related illness.

He was said to have contracted the virus while in the European country for a routine medical check-up.

Lwazi Bam, chief executive, Deloitte Africa, announced his death to the staff of the company on Monday.

“It is with a very heart that I have just been informed of the passing of Olufemi (Femi) Abegunde, our Deputy Africa Board Chair,” Bam announced.

“Femi sadly passed away this morning from COVID-19 related illness. Please will join me in expressing our deep-felt condolences to his wife Yinka and their four daughters.

“Our hearts go out to Femi’s family, friends, and colleagues at this difficult time. Please may I ask you to keep them in your thoughts and prayers.”

Before his death, Abegunde was head of energy and resources in Deloitte West Africa and a member of the Deloitte Africa executive committee, representing the region on the African board.

He had over 30 years of experience in the energy and resources industry — upstream, downstream, power, gas and liquified natural gas (LNG) operations, where he provided assurance, business advisory and tax advisory services to clients within the West African market.

He was a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and an associate of the Chartered Institute of Taxation in Nigeria (CITN).

Abegunde was also a partner at Deloitte and Touche in Nigeria.

He obtained a bachelor’s degree in management and accounting and a masters degree in business administration at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
