Omeruo: We’ll pick the available 12 points

The Super Eagles is targeting the maximum 12 points at stake in their remaining four qualifiers to guarantee qualification to next year’s AFCON in Morocco, defender Kenneth Omeruo said on Tuesday.

The African champions risk missing out of the competition like in 2012 when they failed to qualify under Coach Samson Siasia.

They are third in Group A with a point after losing 3-2 at home to Congo and playing 0-0 with South Africa in Cape Town last month.

Congo top the log with six points, while South Africa are second with four points but Omeruo says all hope is not lost.

“We are aware of the task ahead and so we have resolved to work hard to pick the available 12 points in our remaining qualifiers,” said the Middlesborough defender, who was among the 17 players who trained in Abuja Tuesday morning.

“You can see the response of the boys in the first day of training; it speaks loud of our intention ahead of the games. All we ask of Nigerians is their support and confidence in the team.

“We know there are no minnows anymore in African football.”

Nigeria play Sudan on Saturday before they host the same team in the reverse fixture October 15.

Their other qualifiers are away to Congo in Pointe-Noire and a final group game against South Africa all in November.
