Ibrahim Idris, the inspector-general of police, has approved the deployment of 26,000 personnel, three helicopters, 12 armoured personnel carriers (APCs) and 20 gunboats for Ondo governorship election.

Idris said this at a meeting with Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) official and representatives of political parties in Ondo.

The police boss cautioned security personnel to restrict themselves to designated posts that would be assigned to them.

He said all security personnel should always attach their name tags to their uniforms, adding that anyone caught disobeying the order would be arrested.

“Twenty-six thousand police officers will be deployed in the state, and five officers will be at each polling unit during the election,” Idris said.

While adding that 12 armoured personnel carriers (APCs) would be deployed in some strategic areas, he said three commissioners of police would be in the state for special operations during the election.

He appealed to the electorate to shun violence and urged them to cooperate with all the security agencies to ensure a peaceful election.
