The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) has directed its members to withdraw their services from all academic activities over unpaid salaries and arrears.

Boluwaji Oshodi, the chairman of ASUU at AAUA, addressed journalists in a statement on Sunday.

The communique, co-signed by the ASUU branch’s secretary Olusegun Taiwo, followed a decision reached at its congress held on August 21, 2025.

The union said the strike became inevitable after repeated appeals to the university authorities and the Ondo state government to offset the backlog of salaries and arrears failed to yield results.

“By this memo, our members have been directed to withdraw their services from all academic activities in the University until all our outstanding salaries and arrears are paid,” the statement read.

The union assured stakeholders of its commitment to the overall development of the institution but maintained that the welfare of its members could no longer be neglected.

In the last week, warning protests over unmet demands have been grounding academic activities across public universities in Nigeria.

ASUU’s national body had earlier threatened a nationwide strike over unmet demands.

It demanded that the outstanding salaries and arrears owed to its members be addressed.

ASUU also called on the government to address the poor retirement benefits of professors and other university staff, noting that some senior academics who have served for over 40 years now earn a meagre monthly pension of N150,000.

The union is also pursuing the renegotiation and implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement.

The 2009 agreement is a comprehensive pact between AUU and the government, aimed at improving funding, enhancing staff conditions of service, and ensuring university autonomy.
