In Lagos, building collapses have become disturbingly routine. Between January and June 2025 alone, at least six incidents were recorded in the state, claiming 14 lives and injuring many more.
A recent TheCable feature highlighted how weak enforcement of building codes, substandard materials, and regulatory lapses continue to fuel the crisis.
The Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG) said Nigeria has recorded more than 650 collapse incidents since 1974, with Lagos accounting for over half of the cases.
Ahmed Dangiwa, minister of housing and urban development, has described the frequency of collapses as a “national embarrassment” and promised tighter oversight.
