Orji Uzor Kalu
Edward Okocha, an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, has asked Ude Oko Chukwu, former deputy governor of Abia state, to shelve his senatorial ambition ahead of the 2027 elections.
Chukwu, who served as Abia’s deputy governor from May 2015 to May 2023, quit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the Labour Party (LP) with his supporters on Saturday.
There are speculations that the former deputy governor joined the LP to contest the Abia north senatorial seat.
In a statement on Sunday, the APC chieftain said Chukwu should not challenge Orji Uzor Kalu, senator representing Abia north, whom he described as a “formidable force” and “a strong contender” for the senate presidency in 2027.

Okocha urged Chukwu not to allow the excitement of his new political chapter to push him into the senate race.
He argued that Kalu had already positioned the zone favourably through “quality representation and seniority” in the national assembly.
“Distinguished Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has been doing an outstanding job in the senate, bringing meaningful projects and empowerment to our zone,” Okocha said.

“His legislative experience and seniority make him a strong contender for principal positions, including the senate presidency, which would be a game-changer for our people.
“As we look towards 2027, Abia North stands to benefit more by rallying round Senator Orji Uzor Kalu for re-election, thereby positioning him for greater responsibilities in the Senate. That is the path to unlocking more development and opportunities for our people.”
