Waidi Shaibu, chief of army staff (COAS), has asked the 3,391 newly inducted soldiers of the Nigerian army to uphold discipline, courage and patriotism as they begin their military careers.

Speaking on Saturday at the passing out parade of the 89 regular recruits intake at depot Nigerian army in Osogbo, Osun state capital, Shaibu reminded the recruits that their induction into the army came with enormous responsibility, particularly in defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and contributing to national security.

The parade marked the first graduation ceremony since the establishment of the depot in August in Osogbo.

Describing the event as historic, the army chief said the recruits, as the pioneer set, carry a special responsibility to uphold the reputation and values of the institution.

“This ceremony is historic as the first Passing Out Parade of Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo. You are the pioneer set and you must wear this badge with pride,” Shaibu said.

“Conduct yourselves as worthy ambassadors of this institution throughout your careers.”

He told the new soldiers that they were joining the army at a critical period in the country’s history, characterised by complex and evolving security challenges.

Shaibu urged them to draw confidence from the rigorous training they had undergone and to face adversity with courage and a mindset geared towards success rather than fear of failure.

“To whom much is given, much is expected. You will receive all required support, but the Nigerian Army and the nation will demand much from you,” he said.

He reaffirmed the Nigerian army’s commitment to the welfare and professional development of its personnel, assuring the recruits of sustained moral, physical and material support.

“Our soldiers remain the core and enduring strength of the Nigerian Army. You will be given all you require to succeed, but the nation will also demand much from you,” he said.

“Uphold the core values of the Army and develop the determination to excel in your lives and careers.”

Shaibu commended the commandant, officers, instructors and staff of the new depot for their dedication in training and moulding the recruits into disciplined and combat-ready soldiers.

He also announced that the newly approved depot Nigerian army, Abakaliki, Ebonyi state, would soon commence training activities to further enhance manpower development and operational readiness.

The COAS said the army would streamline training across its depots, with greater emphasis on marksmanship, fieldcraft and other mission-critical skills.
