The Osun government has ordered the indefinite suspension of all the markets operating on a weekly basis across the state.

Rafiu Isamotu, commissioner for health, disclosed this on Tuesday during a sensitization visit to the market women.

Isamotu said the suspension of the weekly markets was necessary to prevent traders from neighbouring states with confirmed cases of coronavirus from coming into Osun.

The commissioner, however, noted that the daily markets would be allowed to function with strict precautionary measures in place, as they attract low patronage compared to the weekly markets.

He educated the market women on the virus and the need for them to practice good hygiene.

He also urged the women to put up handwashing points and provide sanitisers for buyers who patronise them as a measure for preventing the spread of the virus.

Isamotu warned people against loitering around the markets, urging them to leave immediately after carrying out their transactions.

Christiana Ogunfolaju, special adviser to the state governor on commerce, cooperatives and industries, advised the market women present at the meeting to pass the information they have received to others who were not present.

Olubukola Olaboopo, the commissioner for women, children and social affairs, advised the women to report appropriate authorities if anyone is suspected to be infected with the virus.
