More than 200 vehicles were involved in a pile-up on a bridge covered with fog in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou.

One person was reported dead according to rescuers and the state CCTV.

Many injured persons were trapped in their vehicles and the fire department sent 11 fire trucks and 66 fire rescue personnel to help.

“On Wednesday morning, a sudden build-up of fog occurred at the Yellow River Bridge in Zhengzhou, which caused a traffic accident involving the collision of multiple vehicles,” CCTV cited Zhengzhou authorities as saying.

In videos shared on social media, cars and trucks could be seen piled together, leaving passengers stranded.

Icy road surfaces are also thought to have contributed to the accident.

The police have since closed the bridge to all traffic.

A similar pile-up in Henan back in 2018 due to thick fog left nine persons dead and 18 others injured.
