The management of Kelina Hospital says 5,000 surgical operations have been successfully carried out in 15 years of the existence of the healthcare facility.

Celsus Undie, the medical director, who spoke on Saturday during the 15th anniversary of the hospital said the facility has conducted 250 prostrate surgeries using the advanced and non-invasive holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) procedure.

Undie described the highlight of the 15th anniversary as the remarkable feat of performing over 5,000 surgical operations without life-threatening implications since 2008.

“In 2012, the federal government of Nigeria recognised our efforts by awarding us a pioneer status in minimally invasive surgery. In the same year, we went on record as the first hospital to perform laparoscopic radical prostatectomy in Nigeria,” Undie said.

“In 2015, we started aiming for infection-free surgery by the use of plasma sterilization for our endoscopes while in 2011, we were also on record as the first hospital in Nigeria to perform percutaneous nephrolithotomy(PCNL) and laser lithotripsy for kidney stones.”

Undie said some of the equipment that aided the milestones included the 120 watts laser, which was the first of its type in Africa, and the 150 watts laser, reputed as the first in Nigeria since January 2022.

“The American Urological Association and the European Association of Urology both recommend HoLEP as the best for prostates that are more than 80 to 100g in size,” he added.

“There are a lot of challenges with medical work in Nigeria. But I think the challenges have only toughened our resolve to perform optimally.”

The hospital is located in the Victoria Island axis of Lagos state.
