John Oyegun, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says by voting for Godwin Obaseki, winner of Wednesday’s Edo state governorship election, the people of the state have chosen “continuity and consolidation of the massive multi-faceted developments recorded under the administration of Governor Adams Oshiomhole”.

In a message he issued on behalf of the APC national working committee (NWC), yegun congratulated Obaseki and Philip Shuaibu, his running mate, for their victory at the polls.

He also thanked “the good people of Edo state” for the massive turnout during the election.

He also congratulated political parties and their candidates that contested the Edo governorship election for the fair play and relatively peaceful conduct displayed during the election exercise, and appealed to the opposition parties to accept defeat in good faith.

“The people of Edo state voted to ensure continuity and consolidation of the massive multi-faceted developments recorded under the administration of Governor Adams Oshiomhole. The Party assures that we will deliver on this expectation,” read the statement, signed by Edegbe Odemwingie, APC’s assistant director of publicity.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Obaseki winner of the election on Thursday.

Kayode Soremekun, returning officer for the election and vice chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Obaseki polled 319,483 votes to beat his closest challenger, Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 253,173.

However, both Ize-Iyamu and the PDP have expressed their decision to challenge the result of the election in court.

“What INEC is announcing is clearly different from what we got from our agents and independent observers in the 192 wards and over 2,000 units across the state,” Ize-Iyamu had said even before the final result was announced.

“We are rejecting these results as they were being announced by INEC, and we are coming out early enough to make this known.”
