The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it “accepts responsibility for all that has gone wrong for the last 16 years” in the country.

In a statement posted on its verified Twitter handled @PdpNigeria on Sunday, PDP said it was giving Nigerians credit for the successes that were recorded during its 16-year rule.

“We accept responsibility for all that has gone wrong and bad in the last 16 years, and we give Nigerians the credit for successes recorded,” it said.

“We want to run a new PDP that welcomes criticism and see it as a necessity to make amends.

“Under President Yar’Adua’s tenure, militancy and other challenges were conquered. We take responsibility for everything that went wrong. Under President Obasanjo’s eight-year tenure, there were challenges and gains. We take full responsibility.”

The PDP said it was ready to listen to Nigerians, adding: “We require genuine and sincere advice from you because a one-party system is not an option”.

“We have tried our best as a political party, but we must be quick to point out that we were not perfect. We never claimed to be,” it said.

The party also said in a separate statement that it was opening its doors for a merger with other parties, but ruled out any possibility of changing its name.
