PDP NWC holds emergency meeting over defections

The national working committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is currently holding an emergency meeting at the party’s secretariat in Abuja.

The meeting follows a wave of defections that has rattled the opposition party in recent months.

The internal crisis within the PDP has continued to fester ahead of the 2027 general election, with key figures exiting the party.

On April 23, Ifeanyi Okowa, former PDP vice-presidential candidate, and Sheriff Oborevwori, governor of Delta, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Their defection led to the collapse of the PDP’s political structure in Delta, one of its long-standing strongholds.

Monday Onyeme, deputy governor of the state, also joined the APC alongside commissioners, local government chairmen, and grassroots operatives.

The development is said to have triggered concern within the party’s leadership.

The PDP NWC is expected to constitute a caretaker committee to oversee the party’s affairs in Delta for the interim.
