Pension assets rise 0.8% to N12.4trn in April

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) says the total assets under the contributory pension scheme (CPS) rose marginally to N12.40 trillion in April from N12.3 previous month.

This is contained in PenCom’s latest unaudited report on pension funds industry portfolio for the period ended 30 April 2021, released on Wednesday.

According to the report, the total retirement saving account (RSA) registrations slightly increased by 0.22 percent from 9.30 million recorded in March to 9.32 million in April.

PenCom said N8.32 trillion of the funds were invested in the federal government of Nigeria (FGN) securities, which comprises FGN, agency, sukuk and green bonds; treasury bills, and state government securities.

This is a decline of 2.23 percent compared to the total pension fund assets invested in FGN securities in March at N8.51 trillion.

The funds were also invested in corporate debt securities (N794,670 million) comprising corporate bonds, corporate infrastructure bonds, corporate green bonds and supra-national bonds; local money market securities (N1.74 trillion), comprising bank placements, commercial papers and foreign money market securities.

Other areas the funds were invested in are mutual funds (N129,145 million), comprising open/close-end funds, real estate investment trusts, real estate properties, private equity funds, infrastructure funds, cash and other assets; and domestic and foreign ordinary shares.
