Keeping up with Nigerian players abroad: Hat-trick in Germany, goals all around

It was an eventful weekend for Nigerian players abroad as quite a number of them scored goals for their respective teams.

TheCable has a low down on how Nigerian players fared across the globe.


Ibrahim Alhassan saw action for only one minute as Austria Wien defeated Yusuf Otubanjo’s Altach 2-1.


Uche Agbo took lasted the entire match duration as Standard Liege pipped Sporting Charleroi 1-0.

Abdul Ajagun proved instrumental in Kortrijk’s 4-1 win over Waasland Beveren. He scored one of the goals.

Taiwo Awoniyi scored an amazing goal in Royal Excel Mouscron’s 3-0 defeat of Lierse.

Chuba Akpom blanked for St Truiden who lost 1-0 to Lokeren.

Anderson Esiti was active in midfield for Gent in their 2-0 victory at Anderlecht. Moses Simon and Samuel Kalu featured in the win.


Obafemi Martins scored a hat-trick as Shanghai Shenhua came from behind to defeat Hebei CFFC 4-2.

Odion Ighalo’s penalty miss proved costly for Changchun who fell 2-1 at home to Guangzhou FC.

Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel played his fourth game on the spin for Tianjin Teda but his side suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Jiangsu Suning FC.


Nosa Igiebor was in action for Anorthosis Famagusta in their 2-1 win over Omonia Nicosia.

Czech Republic

Ubong Ekpai netted the match winner for Zlin a 2-1 victory over Slavia Prague.


Victor Moses provided an assist but couldn’t stop Tottenham Hotspurs from humbling Chelsea 3-1 at the Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal cruised to a 3-0 home win over struggling Stoke City. Alex Iwobi was an unused substitute.

Two well taken spot kicks by John Akinde helped Barnet to a 2-1 victory over Crewe Alexandra.

Wilfred Ndidi was sent off in Leicester City’s 2-0 victory at Brighton. His compatriot Kelechi Iheanacho missed the game due to injury.

Sone Aluko’s 13th minute strike edged Reading to a 1-0 home win over Queens Park Rangers. Nedum Onuoha and Eberechi Eze featured for the visitors.

Sammy Ameobi accounted for an assist for Bolton Wanderers but it wasn’t enough as the club lost 2-1 away to Leeds United.

Fred Onyedinma was an 88th minute entrant for Millwall who won 2-0 at home to Nottingham Forest.

Hope Akpan failed to make the matchday squad of Burton Albion as his team lost 3-1 at Cardiff City.

Ola Aina played the full match for Hull City in their 0-0 draw against Aston Villa.


Osayamen Osawe struck a hat-trick for Kaiserslautern in the 4-1 win over Duisburg.


Joel Obi came off the bench to score a goal for Torino in their 4-0 win at Cagliari.


Adeleke Akinyemi and Aiyegun Tosin found the back of the net in Ventspils’ 3-1 defeat of Valmerias.


Tony Edjomariegwe was full of running for Olympic Club de Safi but his team lost 1-0 to Ittihad Tanger.


Sadiq Umar scored what turned out to be a consolation for NAC Breda who lost heavily 5-1 to PSV.

Fred Friday was a second half entrant for Sparta Rotterdam in his team’s 2-0 loss at PEC Zwolle.

Tyronne Ebuehi lasted 50 minutes for Ado Den Haag as the hosts fell 3-0 to AZ Alkmaar.

Kelechi Nwakali was in action as MVV Maastricht also fell 2-1 to Den Bosch.


Sunday Akinbule grabbed a brace for Sertanense in the game against AD Nogueirense on Saturday.

Stanley Awurum netted Varzim’s goal from the penalty spot as they shared the spoils with Braga B.


Nigerian forward Aaron Samuel Olanare scored a brace for Amkar Perm in their 2-1 win over Lokomotiv Moscow in the Russian Premier League. Brian Idowu and Fegor Ogude lasted for the full match.

Ahmed Musa was in action for 84 minutes as CSKA Moscow recorded a 2-1 win over Rostov.


Efe Ambrose saw action in Hibernian’s 2-0 victory over Partick Thistle.


Hillary Gong played a pivotal role in two goals as Trencin inflicted a 5-1 defeat on Zilina. Philip Azango was substituted in the 90th minute.


Oghenekaro Etebo missed Las Palmas 3-0 loss at home to Real Madrid through injury. Imoh Ezekiel was brought on in the 85th minute.


Stephen Odey warmed the bench for FC Zurich in their 1-1 draw with Sion.


The trio of William Troost Ekong, Shehu Abdullahi and Mikel Aku featured for Bursaspor who fell 2-0 to the superior Antalyaspor.

Chukwuma Akabueze opened the scoring for Boluspor as they won 2-0 against Gaziantepspor.

Aminu Umar fired blank for Osmanlispor in the goalless draw against Konyaspor. Raheem Lawal wasn’t listed due to injury.

Kenneth Omeruo and Emem Eduok were impressive for Kasimpasa who recorded a 2-0 win at Goztepe.


It was a sweet debut for substitute Olanrewaju Kayode with the powerful striker scoring for Shakhtar Donetsk who defeated Zorya 3-0.
