At least  2.5 tonnes of confiscated elephant tusks and ivories were on Tuesday destroyed in Abuja by officials of the federal ministry of environment.

Speaking during the crushing exercise, Ishaq Salako, minister of state for environment, said the destruction of the confiscated wildlife stockpiles was to show that Nigeria has zero tolerant for illegal wildlife trade.

“The option of outright destruction is aimed at showing the entire world that Nigeria is zero tolerant to illegal wildlife trade at any level and to serve as a deterrent to the illicit wildlife traffickers who uses Nigeria as their transit route,” Salako said.
