The federal capital territory (FCT) chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), in collaboration with the Nizamiye Hospital, has organised a free medical screening for journalists in Abuja.
Over 300 journalists benefitted from the medical outreach, which was held over the weekend at the FCT NUJ secretariat in Utako, Abuja.
Christopher Musa, chief of defence staff (CDS), represented by Momoh Salihu, director of medical services at the defence headquarters, commended the hospital and FCT NUJ for the programme.
“This effort will improve the well-being and productivity of journalists in Abuja and help them stay focused on their job,” Musa said.

Grace Ike, chairperson of the FCT NUJ, praised Nizamiye Hospital for deploying a team of specialists, including a general surgeon, internist, cardiologist, nephrologist, ophthalmologist, and general practitioners, for the medical outreach.
“We will always make sure our members are healthy. They go out to the field every time, and most times they barely have time to check on themselves,” Ike said.
Nurullo Sadokov, deputy medical director of Nizamiye Hospital, said the medical outreach was meant to help journalists identify and prevent diseases and sicknesses.

“From what we have seen so far, there are journalists with blood pressure and blood sugar problems. Our surgeon here has identified some journalists with hernia and haemorrhage,” he said.
“We are making plans for those patients to come to our hospital for proper treatment and management. We came here for a general screening.”
