Aminu Muhammad, a student of Federal University Dutse (FUD), arrested for criticising Aisha, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, has regained freedom.

Muhammad, a final-year student of the department of environmental management, was released on Friday evening.

Security operatives arrested him on November 18 over a tweet that appeared to mock Aisha.

The tweet posted in Hausa in June 2022 reads: “Su mama anchi kudin talkawa ankoshi”. It was accompanied by a photo of Aisha, loosely translates as “Mama has eaten poor people’s money and is now full”.

He was later arraigned on a one-count charge by the police before a federal capital territory (FCT) high court on November 30.

Muhammad’s arrest elicited harsh reactions as many Nigerians criticised the first lady for what they described as “oppression and intimidation”.

Amid the outrage, Aisha withdrew the suit against him on Friday.
