Yusuf Tuggar, minister of foreign affairs, met with Johann Wadephul, his German counterpart, in Berlin on Thursday, in a bid to deepen economic and energy ties between Nigeria and Germany.

Nigeria is Germany’s second-largest trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa.

The German foreign ministry has identified energy cooperation as a key area for bilateral economic relations.

Tuggar spoke about the need to intensify trade relations, particularly in critical raw materials and proposed stronger cooperation in labour migration.

Wadephul said he wanted to encourage the German private sector to become more involved in Nigeria, citing Volkswagen, a car manufacturer, as a positive example.

Improved ties in vocational training and exploration of critical minerals were also discussed between both ministers.

Tuggar once served as an ambassador to Germany.
