Yahaya Bello, Kogi state governor, has approved the “immediate employment” of Abigail Kasuwa Simon, a physically challenged lady.
In a statement shared with TheCable on Tuesday, the Kogi ministry of information and communication said Simon had been doing menial jobs at the ministry of women affairs and social development — despite her educational qualifications.
There, she caught the attention of Fatimah Buba, commissioner of women affairs and social development, who narrated Simon’s story to the governor.
Confirming the lady’s employment, Bello said he was moved by her “resolute spirit” to work hard despite not being an employee.
“I am moved by the resolute spirit of Abigail. From the brief I just received, she keeps coming to the ministry and has been working hard even when she is not a staff of the ministry. This is commendable and should be encouraged,” the governor said.
“To this end, I am directing the head of service to give Abigail automatic and immediate employment in the state civil service. My heartfelt congratulations to her, please.”
Reacting to her appointment, Simon described the news as “a turning point in my life,” adding that she can now practice accounting.
She advised parents to prioritise education for their children, regardless of their physical condition.
“It is a turning point in my life, and now, I can practice my accounting profession. To my governor, you are the best. I thank all that made this a reality,” she said.
“I want to urge parents to educate their children even if they are physically challenged. I hold OND and HND in accounting. Today, the governor has shown that ability is in mind. I will give my best to justify this gesture.”
