Exactly six months after Nigeria confirmed its first case of COVID-19, the number of infections appears to be gradually reducing.

Within the past seven days, the country has moved from 601 new infections on August 22 to as low as 221 cases on August 26.

The first case of COVID-19 was confirmed on February 27, 2020 — he was an Italian who had developed symptoms after flying into the country from Milan, a few days before the confirmation of his status.

Between February and August, the country’s daily count has risen to almost 800 cases, but the figure has reduced over the past few days, compared to previous figures in July and August.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed 296 new coronavirus infections in 16 states and the federal capital territory (FCT) on Thursday, increasing the country’s current total to 53,317.

The agency announced the new figure in its update for August 27, 2020.

According to the breakdown, Plateau topped the list of states with 85 new positive samples, followed by Enugu with 46, Oyo with 31, Lagos with 21, and Rivers with 20, while Niger had the least figure of two new infections.

Over the past six months, Lagos has confirmed the most positive samples with 18,056 patients, but this is a long stretch from FCT which has the second highest of 5,094 cases.

However, FCT currently leads the figure of active cases with 3,572 patients, followed by Lagos with 2,627 infections.

While one fatality was recorded on Thursday, 445 people were discharged, and a total of 40,726 recoveries have now been confirmed across the 36 states and the FCT.

Meanwhile, out of Nigeria’s total of 1,011 fatalities, Lagos accounts for 202 deaths, while Edo has recorded 100.
