Plateau government probes ‘poisoning of cows’ in Bassa LGA

Caleb Mutfwang, governor of Plateau

The Plateau government says it has commenced an investigation into the alleged poisoning of some cattle at the Tafi Gana community of Bassa LGA of the state.

On Thursday, troops of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) intervened in an incident involving the suspected poisoning of livestock in the local government.
Thirty-two cows belonging to a local herder were reportedly killed under mysterious circumstances.

The incident happened in an open field along the Zawura-Jebbu Miango axis, between Dutsen Kura and Jebbu Miango, a region historically prone to ethno-farmer-herder tension.

Speaking about the incident, Joyce Ramnap, the state’s commissioner for information and communications, said officials of the ministry of livestock development, veterinary services, and fisheries have been directed to immediately commence an investigation into the incident.

“Our attention has been drawn to an allegation circulating on social media concerning the alleged poisoning of 36 cows belonging to one Malam Samaila Nuhu of the Tafi Gana community of Bassa,” she said.

“While government is deeply concerned about this, it urges the public to remain calm and avoid speculations or narratives that may further inflame tensions and disrupt the peace in the area.

“In line with the government’s commitment to justice, transparency, and peaceful coexistence among all citizens, the Ministry of Livestock Development, Veterinary Services, and Fisheries has been directed to immediately commence a thorough investigation into the incident.
