Raphael Warnock, a United States senator, has extended his condolences to the residents of Plateau following the attacks that claimed over 150 lives on Christmas Eve.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Warnock spoke in response to a statement issued by the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) on Wednesday.

“I will look further into this issue and seek opportunities to support humanitarian efforts, including the protection of religious freedom,” the senator added.

He said there was a need to provide relief, work towards security and stability, and stand against those targeting their own people.

He also assured NIDO of his commitment to considering their perspectives when evaluating legislation related to human rights in Nigeria.

Warnock supports the US international affairs budget and efforts to protect human rights, promote democratic values, and ensure long-term peace and stability.

In its earlier statement, NIDO had called for a thorough investigation of the killings.

The organisation extended condolences to the victims’ families and prayed for the healing of the injured.

“NIDO calls on the international community and media outlets to join in solidarity against such acts of violence,” the statement reads.

“In these trying times, NIDO America and Warnock stand united in advocating for justice, humanitarian support, and a world free from violence.

“Together, we aim for peace, security, and respect for all human beings.”

The tragic events in Plateau have sparked an outpouring of grief and solidarity within the Nigerian community and beyond.

Pope Francis had expressed concern over the growing insecurity, asking God to free Nigeria from these horrors.

So far, about 11 suspects have been arrested by the police in connection with the attacks.
