Plateau, Rivers and Abia topped the list of states with new coronavirus infections with 216 cases confirmed by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Wednesday.

The new cases were confirmed in 14 states and the federal capital territory (FCT).

According to the breakdown, Plateau recorded 59 positive samples, followed by Rivers with 27, Abia with 22, while Lagos had 20.

The Wednesday figure reflected a slight drop in the daily case count over the past 24 hours – 239 new infections were confirmed on Tuesday.

However, four new deaths were recorded in FCT, Plateau, Ondo and Ekiti, increasing the country’s fatality toll from 1,023 to 1,027.

Nigeria’s daily figure of recoveries also rose to its highest in five days with 429 people discharged.

Out of more than 410,000 samples tested since February, 54,463 have been confirmed positive but 42,439 patients have recovered.

Meanwhile, according to the NCDC situation update for September 1, Lagos is the only state that has tested more than 100,000 samples.

According to the data on testing capacity for all states and the FCT, the top five are: Lagos, 100,607; FCT, 49,022; Kano, 43,441; Plateau, 24,469 and Oyo, 19,807, while the five states with the least samples tested are Cross River, 839; Taraba, 705; Yobe, 475; Zamfara, 397 and Kogi, 241.
