A total of 42 rape allegations have been investigated in Kano between January and May 2020, out of which 33.3 percent were committed in uncompleted buildings.

Abdullahi Haruna, public relations officer of the Kano police command, disclosed this in an interview with NAN on Thursday.

Haruna said the suspects had been charged to courts in the state.

He disclosed that statistical analysis of the rape cases showed that 33.3 percent of the rape incidents were committed in uncompleted buildings, while 17.7 percent took place in farmlands.

“15.6 percent in shops; 15.6 percent at the suspects’ residences and 8.9 percent in schools, while 6.7 percent and 2.2 percent of the cases were committed at the victims’ residences and market places, respectively,” Haruna said.

“The police is dealing with all reported rape and gender-based violence (GBV) cases in the state.”

He, however, said the number of rape cases had dropped as against what was recorded within the same period in 2019.

Haruna urged residents to always report cases of molestation and other forms of abuse to the police, adding that the police is committed to addressing the menace.

“Keeping quiet without reporting rape cases will encourage the perpetrators to further commit the crime,” he said.

“Our doors are open for advice; in this era of community policing, the command incorporates community problem-solving approach in handling issues in the state.”
