The police in Kano have admitted that they were negligent in the case of Ese Oruru, the teenager allegedly abducted and forced to convert to Islam by her supposed boyfriend.

Shuaibu Lawal Gambo, the assistant inspector general of police in charge of zone one, Kano, told journalists in Thursday that the force could have done more before it became a public issue.

The matter had reportedly been referred to the police by the Kano emir’s palace in August 2015 so that the girl could be re-united with her family, but the force did not take any action.

Shuaibu said: “Police ought to have followed up on the case with the sharia commission to confirm whether it has resolved or not.”

He denied knowledge of the rumour that the girl is pregnant.

“The force headquarters are in better position to explain her health status because they are the ones that conducted health examination on her,” he said.

The girl, then 14, was allegedly abducted from Bayelsa by another teenager simply identified as Yunusa from Kano state.
